Ranji Trophy 2016-17, Quarter-finals, Day 3 - Review

Ranji Trophy 2016-17 has reached the business end of the tournament. With Tamil Nadu through to the semi-finals, there are six teams keenly contesting for the other three semi-final berths. Tamil Nadu registered a crushing victory at the end of day, over heavyweights Karnataka. The focus shifted to the other three games on day 3. The day 3 saw the bowlers do the talking. Gujarat’s Jasprit Bumrah was back in the thick of action with a crucial 5-wicket haul against Odisha.

The match between Mumbai and Hyderabad looks set for a thrilling finish. The winner of the match between Haryana and Jharkhand is sure to propel a new team in the semi-finals. Here is a brief round up of day 3 action of the quarter-finals of Ranji Trophy 2016-17:

 

Mumbai v Hyderabad, Raipur – Mumbai lead by 116 runs

Hyderabad resumed their overnight score of 166/3 on day 3. They looked good for a first innings lead. At one stage, the Hyderabadi side was well placed at 255/5 and had only 40 odd runs to fetch for the lead. However, it was the experience of Mumbai team that came to the fore. The last five Hyderabad wickets fell for just 25 runs. They were bowled out for 280.

Veteran all-rounder Abhishek Nayar bagged four wickets for Mumbai. Mumbai finished with a score of 102/3 at the end of day 3. Skipper Aditya Tare remained unbeaten on 39 at the end of day’s play.

Gujarat v Odisha, Jaipur – Gujarat lead by 310 runs

After low scoring first innings totals, Gujarat batted well in the second innings to end at 246/3 at the end of day 3. Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah’s 5/41 saw Gujarat bundling out Odisha for a mere 199. This gave Gujarat a handy lead of 64 runs in the first innings.

The star of the season for Gujarat thus far, Priyank Panchal, continued his merry run as he plundered 81 runs in the second innings. Samit Gohel hit a well compiled unbeaten 110 to put the Parthiv Patel-led side in a commanding position. With a handsome 310 runs lead, Gujarat look well on top in the match.

Haryana v Jharkhand, Baroda – Haryana lead by 59 runs

Jharkhand were well on top in the match on day 2 of the match against Haryana. They were placed at 228/3 at the end of day 2. Virat Singh and Ishank Jaggi scored 107 and 77 each before heading back to the pavilion. The tail failed to contribute and Jharkhand eventually ended with 345 runs on the board in their first innings. They secured a crucial 93 runs lead.

Harshal Patel was the pick of the bowlers for Haryana as he bagged 4/46. Haryana batsmen applied themselves in a much better manner in the second innings. They finished on 146/2 at the end of day three despite twin strikes by Samar Quadri.
