Ranji Trophy 2016-17: Quarterfinal, Day 2 Review
The biggest news from the Ranji Trophy 2016/17 today came from the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Vizag where Tamil Nadu, after bowling out Karnataka for 88 in the first innings, wrapped up the match by securing a stunning 7 wickets win inside the first two days. Karnataka after a facing embarrassment at the hands of Aswin Crist made a good comeback by rattling up TN for just 152.
But, unfortunately, Karnataka could not rectify their first innings batting blunder a were again cleaned up for a mediocre total of 150 runs. Only KL Rahul made a respectable individual score, getting 77 against his name while three of the middle order batsman Stuart Binny, Manish Pandey and CM Gautam registered ducks. Set an easy target of 87 runs, the TN batsman, after struggling a bit were rallied by Dinesh Kartik’s 41 runs knock and eventually won the match.
Mumbai, who rebuild their innings yesterday and reached a respectable position once again experienced a slump and were bundled out for 294 after resuming to bat on 250/5. Day one’s hero, Lad could add only 9 runs to his overnight score of 101 and was the first to depart at the score of 110. Hyderabad made to stick with the momentum they gained through their bowlers finishing on a comfortable 167/3 at stumps with help of Tanmay Agarwal’s 63 run knock.
The Gujarat v Odisha game which came to an early end on day one due to bad playing conditions saw a smooth day’s play. The Parthiv Patel led side managed just 263 in the first innings after being at a tricky 197/6.
Chirag Gandhi, the middle order batsman, returned as the top scorer for the side with a fabulous 81 runs knock. For Odisha, Basant Mohanty contributed with fine figures of 5/68. Coming in to bat for the second innings, Odisha found themselves struggling against the pace of Jasprit Bumrah and ended the day 184/8, clearly way behind Gujarat’s first innings today.
