Ranji Trophy 2016-17, Round 2, Day 1 – Review
The first day of the round 2 of Ranji Trophy 2016-17 saw an even battle between the bat and the ball. Yuvraj Singh bagged all the limelight though with an unbeaten 163 against Madhya Pradesh. It was the group A encounter that saw Punjab dominate the proceedings. Yuvraj was well supported by Gukeerat Mann who is batting 5 short of his century. Punjab sit comfortably at 340/3 at the end of day’s play. Tamil Nadu is staring at an upset against Railways.
D Bansal and M Singh rocked the Tamil Nadu batting to bundle them on 121. Railways, in their reply, are well on course to take the lead ending the day on 58/2. Goa’s batting woes do not seem to end. In the Group C encounter against Jammu and Kashmir, Goa reel on 45/5. This came in response to J & K’s first innings total of 227 riding on Parvez Rasool’s fighting 82.
Twin centuries from Swapnil Gugale and Ankit Bawne have helped Maharashtra end day 1 on a dominating score of 290/2 against Delhi. Odisha and Saurashtra look evenly balanced in their encounter at Hyderabad. Odisha’s openers Sandeep Pattanaik and Ranjith Singh resisted the Saurashtra’s pace attack well after been put to bat. 18-year old Sandeep kept striking boundaries and brought up his fifty in just 71 balls. The 85-run opening stand was broken by Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, who trapped Ranjith in front for 30.
Despite wickets falling on one end, Sandeep Pattanaik carried on his innings well and completed his century in 183 balls. However, double strikes from Shaurya kept the Odisha’s innings unsettling. Sandeep’s hard-fought knock of 123 off 213 balls with 22 fours came to an end when he was caught by Sheldon Jackson off Jadeja. Odisha’ innings ended on 228.
On the bowling front, Yuzvendra Chahal bagged the accolades on the day 1 of round 2 of Ranji Trophy 2016-17. Playing for Haryana against Hyderabad, Chahal bagged 6/44 to restrict Hyderabad to 191 in their first innings.
