The day 1 of the round 2 of Ranji Trophy 2016-17 belonged to veteran batsman Yuvraj Singh. He made most of the headlines. The 2nd day saw two new players being unearthed. Maharashtra batsmen made the most of their chances against Delhi. Skipper Swapnil Gugale and middle-order batsman Ankeet Bawane broke a 69-year-old record to create the highest partnership in Ranji Trophy history. The partnership was an unbeaten 594 – the second highest ever in first-class cricket. Maharashtra declared on 635/2 with Gugale unbeaten on 351 and Bawane unbeaten on 258.
Punjab were in a commanding position yesterday. Centuries from Yuvraj Singh and Gurkeerat Mann had put them in the driver’s seat against Madhya Pradesh. However, they lost 7 wickets in space of 27 runs to bundle out for 378. Yuvraj scored 177 while Mann scored 103. Ishwar Pandey was the wrecker in chief with 8/102 in his fiery spell this morning.
Saurashtra were shocked by some brilliant spell of bowling from Odisha’s pacers Mohanty and Pradhan on 2nd day morning as they were reduced to 38/5. Captain Jaydev Shah and Chirag Jani rebuilt the Saurashtra’s innings with a 88-run stand for the 6th wicket. Jaydev scored 64 at a brisk rate with 8 fours in 98 balls. Chirag Jani scored 45 as Saurashtra bundled out for 186.
With a first innings lead of 42, Odisha batted 23 overs before stumps and ended the day at 62 for loss of 2 wickets. Jaydev Unadkat trapped first innings centurion Sandeep Pattanaik in the 3rd over.
