If bowlers enjoyed a good day on day 1 of the 8th round of Ranji Trophy 2016-17, they caused mayhem on day 2. In the 13 games played today, more than 130 wickets fell across the country. In the Krishnagiri Stadium of Kerala, Maharashtra were dismissed twice today by Odisha who won the game on only the second day of the match by the margin of an innings and 118 runs.

Assam, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Goa were the other teams who lost 10 wickets in a single day’s play today. Chhattisgarh was the only team among these who did not concede a first innings lead. Many teams that were left behind in the game after the first day made a comeback on the basis of their strong bowling performance while some tightened their grip further.

Both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh along with Tripura earned a handy first innings lead after a mediocre first innings batting performance on the first day. Similarly, Jharkhand, having collapsed in the morning session today with the bat came back strongly with the ball bowling out Assam to gain a first innings lead of 190 runs.

Delhi looked like following the same path of a batting collapse but were saved by an unbeaten 82* from their number 8 batsman Manan Sharma making sure that Delhi doesn’t end up trailing in the first innings

Bengal were dismissed for an embarrassing 99 in the first innings but came back nicely with both bat and ball today. They didn’t allow any Mumbai batsman to flourish dismissing them in the morning session and put up a much stronger batting performance to come over the deficit ending the day with a lead of 68 runs with 7 wickets still in hand.

20 wickets fell in Dhanbad on day 1 followed by 13 on the second. The pitch played much better today and Goa posted 276 in their second innings but Andhra, with the help of an important first innings lead, are in a much stronger position to win the game tomorrow chasing 233.

On a day where bowlers had their say, one batsman who took the honors was Gujarat’s Priyank Panchal. Resuming his innings from his overnight score of 134, he completed  a triple century today which helped Gujarat take full control of the game against Punjab as they declared their first innings for a massive score of 624/6 in the twilight period of the day. With Punjab 1 wicket down already, they will certainly miss their star batsman Yuvraj Singh who tied the knot today.
