Hundreds, 5-wicket hauls (even 7-wicket hauls), nervous nineties, huge totals, batting collapses – the opening day of Round 6 of Ranji Trophy 2016/17 had everything in store for a cricket lover. The balance between the bat and the ball was not maintained in some games as a few teams seemed like running away with the match on the first day itself but it was certainly maintained throughout the country.

Out of all teams, Maharashtra had the best day. They bundled out Vidarbha for 59 and then seized a sizeable lead of 181 runs with just 3 wickets down riding on a massive partnership between Ankit Bawne and the centurion Naushad Shaikh. Vidarbha, who were already struggling with their batting after getting dismissed for 111 and 176 in their previous game, fell down to a new low today because of a brilliant spell of fast bowling from Anupam Sanklecha who finished with 7/25.

In Vizianagaram, Karnataka continued their good run and will be looking to get to 400 tomorrow morning. KL Rahul’s 76 in his comeback game came as good news for the Indian team who are waiting for him to get back to the national side as soon as possible. Mumbai proved to be a good batting day for both Kerala and Hyderabad. On one hand, Hyderabad won’t be disappointed with their effort against Services and on the other, Kerala found two centurions in Rohan Prem and Bhavin Thakkar as they raced away to 290/2 versus Goa.

It was a good batting day in Mumbai but it was not a good batting day for Mumbai as they were bowled out against Uttar Pradesh. Suryakumar Yadav tried his best to save Mumbai’s sinking ship but got out for an unfortunate 99. On the other hand, UP was also at his best as chinaman Kuldeep Yadav took 4/46 in his 15.2 overs. Baroda, who were dismissed for 93 in their previous, had another poor day with the bat and were bundled out for 183. Tripura was another team who were left behind in the game because of their batting.
