Ranji Trophy 2017-18, Round 3, Day 1, Review
Jiwanjot Singh scored a superb double century for Punjab in a crucial encounter for his team.
The domestic season of Ranji Trophy entered into its third round on Tuesday and it witnessed as many as seven centuries on the first day. The young sensation of Indian cricket Prithvi Shaw smashed a swashbuckling ton for Mumbai in a high-profile encounter against Tamil Nadu. He scored 123 at the top which helped the hosts score 314/7 at stumps. Vijay Shankar was the star with the ball for Tamil nadu as he scalped 3 important wickets and R Ashwin snaffled a couple with his crafty off-spin.
Andhra rode on the centuries from Hanuma Vihari and DB Prashant Kumar as the former remained unbeaten on 143. The latter was dismissed on 127 as Odisha conceded 278 and could only take two wickets staring at a big first first innings total. The match between Tripura and Madhya Pradesh saw only 40 overs being bowled in which the home side collapsed and lost 6 wickets for just 88 runs. Ishwar Pandey bagged a three-fer and looked threatening from the word go as Ankit Sharma supported him with a couple of wickets.
Jammu and Kashmir was bowled out for 261 after opting to bat first as Piyush Chawla scalped a magnificent five-wicket haul for Gujarat. Shubham Khajuria and Ahmad Omar scored half-centuries but they couldn’t convert a promising start. The home side was 15/0 at stumps as the openers saw the tricky period carefully. In Trivandrum, Kerala looked set for a big total and scored 232 for the loss of just three wickets against Rajasthan. Haryana continued to struggle with their batting and were bundled out for a paltry total of 208 against Jharkhand in Ranchi.
In a group A encounter between Karnataka and Hyderabad, 13 wickets fell on the opening day as the former side were folded for 216 courtesy 4/42 from Mohammad Siraj. But the bowlers fought back for them as Hyderabad stumbled to 51/3 by the end. The second day would be the most exciting of all as the teams would look take the first innings lead. Maharashtra dominated against Uttar Pradesh and piled on 234/4 on the back of a sensational unbeaten ton form Ankit Bawne (107*). On the other hand, Assam lost eight wickets for just 216 at home against Railways.
Jiwanjot Singh lit up the Stadium in Porvorim by a brilliant unbeaten double hundred as Punjab dominated the first day by scoring 396/2. The bowlers looked clueless against the batsmen as Anmolpreet Singh too reached his ton in what is a big game for the visitors. Chattisgarh rode on the centuries from Amandeep Khare and Ashutosh Singh and finished the day on 246/3 with the former still unbeaten on 116 against Vidarbha. The honours were shared in Delhi in the match between Himachal Pradesh and Services. Himachal posted 273 runs for the loss of five wickets.
