Ranji Trophy 2017-18, Round 7 - Day 3 Review

The third day of the ongoing Ranji Trophy season saw Mumbai qualify for the quarterfinals of the tournament in style. Tripura collapsed in their second innings and lost last seven wickets for just 75 thereby giving Mumbai a golden chance to progress with a bonus point. After bowling out the visitors for 288, the hosts had to chase only 62 which they did under seven overs thanks to a splendid half-century from the young upcoming star Prithvi Shaw.

Jharkhand was bowled out for 242 in reply to Gujarat’s 411 and were enforced a follow-on by the visitors. The home side fared better in their second chance and ended the day on 106/2 courtesy the half-century from the opener. The bonus point victory for Mumbai has made things tough for Madhya Pradesh as they are in a must-win situation against Odisha going into the final day. Odisha have batted extremely in their second innings and have lost only 4 wickets for 237 runs still 4 runs adrift before taking the lead. MP has to enforce a result in their favour to qualify.

Hyderabad made a stunning comeback after being enforced a follow-on by Delhi and rode on the century from Akshath Reddy. They wiped out the deficit and now lead by 23 runs going into the final day giving themselves a chance of ending the tournament with a good show. Mayank Agarwal is ruling the competition this year and smashed yet another ton in the second innings against Railways. He is still going strong and have a chance to smash a double century on the final day of league stages.

Rajasthan is striving hard to save the match after being bowled out for 245 in reply to 534 posted by Saurashtra. They have 10 wickets intact going into the last day and would hope to draw the match. Kerala is all set to win their encounter against Haryana as they scalped five of their wickets in the second innings after posting 389 on the board. Haryana still trail by 98 runs and it is very unlikely for their lower order to put up a fight against the more equipped Kerala side.

Punjab is also on the cusp of a bonus point victory as Services trail by 212 runs in their second innings with only seven wickets in hand. An innings victory will give them a realistic chance to qualify if Bengal loses out on a lead. Vidharbha and Himachal Pradesh are all set to play out a draw after the former side scored 456 in their innings thanks to the double century from Faiz Fazal. HP in their second chance lost three quick wickets for just 70 runs and unless the collapse continues it is highly unlikely to affect a result in the game.

Bengal is all set to qualify it seems after bowling out Goa for 310 and earned a crucial lead of 69 runs. They might just trump Punjab after playing out a draw on the final day. Maharashtra signed off from the tournament in style after chasing down the target of 216 with the loss of just three wickets against Assam. Naushad Shaikh slammed an impressive century after the top order failed to make a decent score.
