Ranji Trophy 2018-19: Lalchand Rajput's son Akhil hits maiden century for Mizoram
He scored 124 runs in the second innings of the game.
The new season of Ranji Trophy is currently in progress in India as a total of nine teams have been added to the tournament from this year. These teams are fighting it out in the Plate Division of the competition and Mizoram locked horns with Arunachal Pradesh in the second round. A not so high-profile game is currently trending in the domestic circuit as former India cricketer Lalchand Rajput’s son Akhil Rajput has slammed his maiden first-class century.
Chasing a mammoth total of 410 runs in the second innings, Akhil Rajput opened along with Lalhruaizela. But the latter could only muster eight runs while his partner was going great guns at the other end. Taruwar Kohli then joined hands with Akhil as they took the attack to the opposition. Akhil, in particular, was the aggressor in the 157-run partnership as he went on to score a scintillating century.
Akhil, who joined Mizoram as an outstation player ahead of this season, scored 124 runs off just 134 deliveries with 19 fours and a solitary maximum. Just when it seemed like he will take the game away from Arunachal, Kshitiz Sharma nipped him out with 16 overs to go to end the day.
Can Mizoram create history?
Mizoram ended the day on 244/2 after 59 overs with the set Kohli unbeaten on 85. They still need 166 runs to win the game and if they manage to chase the total, it will be a history. However, the rain has played spoilsport thus far on the last day and it will be interesting to see if the play resumes.
As far as Lalchand Rajput is concerned, he will be delighted to see his son’s progress in the first-class arena. He is currently in Bangladesh as the head coach of Zimbabwe team who are looking to play out the final day and win the rare Test series. They still have four wickets in hand with more than 45 overs of play left.
