Wasim Jaffer and his incandescent love affair with the Ranji Trophy continued for yet another round as the 40-year-old registered a scintillating hundred on Day 1 of round 8. Defending champions Vidarbha, banking on Jaffer’s 196-ball 178, went on to pile up a massive 389 runs on board losing four wickets on an opening day against Mumbai.

Another big knock on the day came from Krunal Pandya, who steered Baroda into a commanding position with his 160-run knock. His knock included 21 boundaries and was well supported by Mitesh Patel, who remained unbeaten on 55 at stumps. Baroda head into Day 2 at 289/6.

Karnataka took the pole position against Chhattisgarh in their Group A game after Dega Nischal and Krishnamurthy Siddharth scored centuries. Nischal remained unbeaten on 107 whilst Siddarth registered 105, to help their side amass 273 runs for the loss of four scalps at stumps.

Siddarth Kaul blows Kerala away

Punjab had a walk in the park after they were made to field first against Kerala. With fast bowler Siddarth Kaul running riot, the south Indian side had no answer and could register only 121 runs in their first innings. Kaul picked up six wickets in his spell. Punjab, at stumps, were at 135/2 with Jiwanjot Singh getting a fifty.

The battle of the Telugu speaking states began on a competitive note as both Andhra and Hyderabad fought it out hard on Day 1. Hyderabad registered 226 runs at stumps losing seven wickets courtesy half-centuries from skipper Akshath Reddy and Himalay Agarwal. KV Sasikanth picked up three wickets for Andhra.
