Ranji Trophy 2019-20: Round 8, Day 1- Round-up

The eighth round of the ongoing 2019-20 Ranji Trophy kicked off across the length and breadth of the country today. Punjab’s Siddharth Kaul wreaked havoc on the first day after he scalped a hat-trick to decimate Andhra’s batting force. After Andhra managed to post only 97 runs in their 1st innings, they retaliated by curbing Punjab at a modest score of 108.

Shoaib Md Khan and S Ashish scalped five wickets each to put Andhra back into the driving seat. However, Andhra’s misery with the bat continued in the second innings as the Ricky Bhui-led side lost four wickets before the stumps on Day 1. It was quite an eventful day for bowlers as the crowd witnessed 24 wickets falling on the first day of the encounter.

In the match between Puducherry and Manipur, Fabid Ahmed hogged the limelight with an unbeaten 154-run knock to propel his side to post 363 runs on the board before stumps. He was also assisted by skipper Paras Dogra’s gritty half-century. Chhattisgarh also put up a strong batting display against Jharkand as they amassed 238/4 before the stumps. Skipper Harpreet Singh emerged as their talisman after smashing an unbeaten ton. Opener Jiwanjot Singh also smashed a half-century.

Wickets galored in the encounter between Uttarakhand and Services after Services curbed Uttarakhand at the score of 83 runs in the first innings, courtesy brilliant bowling performances from Diwesh Pathania and Raushan Raj. Uttarakhand bounced back on the back of Mayank Mishra’s six-wicket haul as they dismantled Services’ batting line-up and restricted them to a total of 173 runs. Bengal‘s Mukesh Kumar also stole the limelight against Rajasthan by scalping six wickets on the first day. Rajasthan posted 241 runs in the first innings.

Ravikumar Samarth also steered Karnataka to a respectable total of 233/3 by smashing an unbeaten ton. In the much-awaited clash between Mumbai and Saurashtra, Sarfaraz Khan gathered 78 runs to continue his run-scoring spree along with Shams Mulani, who also smashed a gritty half-century. Dharmendrasinh Jadeja was the pick of Saurashtra’s bowling attack as he scalped five wickets.
