Ranveer Singh set to play role of Kapil Dev in upcoming Bollywood movie
Earlier, there were reports of Arjun Kapoor taking the role.
Popular Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has reportedly been roped in as the lead character in the upcoming Bollywood movie based on the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Ranveer is set to play the role of legendary former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev in the narrative. Over the last few years, the craze around the Bollywood has been to come up with movies based on real life characters.
The sports persons are the most preferred themes for such movies. The trend of making Bollywood movies based on sports or sports heroes started over a decade ago with Chak De India portraying the glory of women’s hockey in India. Among the non-fiction movies based on sports persons, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was the breakthrough movie.
Most recently, the biopics of cricketers have fetched a lot of attention. Emraan Hashmi starred in the movie Azhar and played the role of Mohammad Azharuddin. Soon, Sushant Singh Rajput starrer MS Dhoni: The Untold Story was a big hit at the box office. Sachin: A Billion Dreams had decent success at the box office too.
Now, as per the recent update by popular movie critic Taran Adarsh, the upcoming movie centered around India’s World Cup winning campaign in 19883 is set to feature Ranveer Singh in the lead role of Kapil Dev. Earlier, there were reports of Arjun Kapoor taking the role. Also, there were reports about Hrithik Roshan being considered for the role.
To be directed by Kabir Khan
The movie will be directed by veteran movie maker Kabir Khan. He has been the force behind hit movies like “New York”, “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, and “Tubelight”. The movie will be produced by Phantom films, co-owned by filmmakers Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl, Vikramaditya Motwane and Madhu Mantena, a report in RepublicWorld suggests.
Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh is currently preparing for his upcoming flick, Padmavati. He will be playing the role of Ala-ud-din Khilji.
