Ranveer Singh's '83 movie: Who plays who?

The first trailer of Kabir Khan’s ’83 movie was released on Tuesday, November 30. The film starring Ranveer Singh takes one through the Indian team’s journey to winning the first World Cup under the captaincy of Kapil Dev in 1983. It is a no-brainer that the trailer has already left the netizens frenzy as they are all raring to watch the most anticipated movie.

A close to four-minute trailer takes one through quite a few iconic moments that paved the way to the historic victory of the Indian cricket team. The movie is all set to hit the theatres on December 4 and the fans have already termed it as a blockbuster. Cricket rules the Indian imagination and a movie that would take one through the torrent of emotions of one of the most historic wins would undoubtedly intrigue the on-lookers.

Ranveer Singh is playing the role of India’s former skipper Kapil Dev who led the side in the 1983 World Cup. To enhance the appeal of his character, Singh spent 10 days at the Haryana Hurricane’s residence to not only get the command of the game but also pick up instances from Dev’s life. After all playing a character of this stature brings its own challenges.

2. Tahir Raj Bhasin as Sunil Gavaskar

India’s legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar is widely renowned for his technique, especially against the pacers. Actor and model, Tahir Raj Bhasin will play the role of the legendary Indian cricketer in the movie.

3. Ammy Virk as Balwinder Sandhu

The Punjabi singer, producer, and actor Ammy Virk will be seen as Balwinder Sandhu. The legendary bowler had exuded his flair as he clean bowled Gordon Greenidge with a lethal inswinger. Virk also featured in the 2015 Punjabi film, Angrej.

4. Sahil Khattar as Syed Kirmani

YouTuber, television host and actor, Sahil Khattar will play Syed Kirmani in the movie. He is a sports enthusiast and being a radio jockey, has hosted quite a few sports events. Kirmani is one of the best wicket-keepers who was part of the team that lifted the cup.

5. Chirag Patil as Sandeep Patil

Well, this goes down as pretty fascinating as Marathi actor Chirag Patil who is also the son of former cricketer Sandeep Patil will fill in his father’s shoes. The cricketer is reported to have displayed immense promise by stepping into the field despite dealing with an injury.

6. Saqib Saleem as Mohinder Amarnath

Amarnath was one of the pivotal cogs of the team’s wheel in the 1983 World Cup. He was the “Man of the Match” in the finals and semi-finals matches. Hindi film actor, Saqib Saleem will play the role of the former cricketer and current analyst.

7. Hardy Sandhu as Madan Lal

A former cricket player and Punjabi pop sensation Hardy Sandhu will portray Madan Lal in the film. In the summit clash of the 1983 World Cup, Kapil Dev had grabbed a stunning catch of Vivian Richards off the bowling of Lal.

8. R Badree as Sunil Valson

Valson is the only former cricketer who was part of the setup but did not get to play a single match in the tournament. South Indian actor R Badree will step in his shoes in the ’83 movie.

9. Adinath Kothare as Dilip Vengsarkar

Dilip Vengsarkar was also one of the key players of the side in the World Cup. Marathi actor, director, and producer, Adinath Kothare will play Vengsrakar in the movie. The former cricketer had taken over the captaincy responsibilities from Kapil Dev post the World Cup.

10. Jatin Sarna as Yashpal Sharma

Jatin Sarna who featured in the Sacred Games will play Yashpal Sharma in the film. The former cricketer had scored 89 runs in the first match of the tournament and fashioned India’s victory against the West Indies. He is also renowned for playing an innovative shot off Bob Willis that has gone down as one of the most enduring images of India’s semifinal victory against England.

11. Dhairya Karwa as Ravi Shastri

Dhairya Karwa who was last seen in the movie ‘Uri’ will play one of the important characters in the movie. He will be seen portraying Ravi Shastri who had opened the innings alongside Gavaskar in two matches of the 1983 World Cup.

12. Nishant Dahiya as Roger Binny

Dahiya will portray India’s all-rounder Roger Binny in the movie. Binny is renowned for displaying his repertoire in the mega event. He had scalped 18 wickets in the marquee event.

13. Dinker Sharma as Kirti Azad

Sharma who was last seen in the Netflix series ‘Delhi Crime’ will play the famous bowler Kirti Azad in the film. Azad was termed to be one of the most notorious amongst the team.

14. Jiiva as Krishnamachari Srikkanth

South Star Jiiva is making his Bollywood debut with this movie. He will play the role of India’s former skipper Krishnamachari Srikkanth. His Tamil accented Hindi will be interesting to watch out for in the movie.

15. Pankaj Tripathi as Man Singh, Team Manager

Tripathi will be seen as the manager of the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian team. Previously he had stated about the emotional ride he went through whilst reading the script of the movie. “It was an emotional ride for me while going through the script. At some of the places, I was in tears. I am really inspired by the whole journey of Kapil Dev. From when I heard the script, I was certain that I wanted to be a part of this film,” he said as quoted by Tribune India.
