India had the best of starts in the 6-match ODI series after South Africa won the Test series 2-1. The victory in the first ODI was rather a tougher one than the second ODI victory which India won comprehensively. If it was Virat Kohli, who struck a 100 in the opener against South Africa, it was Yuzvendra Chahal who spun the web around the Proteas batsman. After electing to field first, India got off to a flyer with right-arm pacer Bhuvaneshwar Kumar picking up a wicket in the powerplay over.
It was Hashim Amla, who was dismissed by the beauty of an out-swinger from Kumar, with the scoreline reading 39-1. A brief partnership emerged between the left-handed Quinton de Kock and the new Proteas skipper Aiden Markram before de Kock holed out to the deep off the bowling of the Indian leggie Chahal.
Furthermore, Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav joined the party picking up the wicket of the skipper who too like his predecessor picked the man in the deep. David Miller edged the ball going away from his body to the slip fielder as South Africa slipped to 51/4.
Rashid Khan commends fellow leggie Chahal for his impressive spell:
Chahal in his next spell picked up the remaining four wickets as South Africa got bundled out for a score of 118, which incidentally was the lowest for the home side at Centurion. The leggie ended up with figures of 5/22, with only Sunil Joshi picking up better figures in South Africa.
The fifer also marked the leggie’s first five-wicket haul in One-day Internationals, with Virat Kohli’s trust in him paying India the dividends. Another leggie who has been impressive in the past two years has been the Afghan leggie, Rashid Khan.
After having a tremendous Big Bash League, Rashid took to Twitter to appreciate the leggie for his first fifer in ODI’s, further commending the way the leggie bowled against the home side in the 6-match ODI series.
Well bowled @yuzi_chahal ??????
