8. Chennai Super Kings (7.5/10)
The three-time IPL champions will be going into IPL 2020, little worries with their bowling unit. The team that is considered as a sure shot qualifier, will have some things to sort out, before starting their campaign this time around. Chennai as a team is known to be the one which has the least number of changes in their playing XI through the season will have to tinker with their set up, more frequently, as compared to the previous editions.
One of the main reasons for this is the probable absence of Deepak Chahar for a major chunk of the season. Chahar, who used to be a major part of the pace bowling core of the team, is out of action due to injury and is expected to return only by late March or early April.
And, even then it is not sure that he would be fit enough to bowl to his full potential. Thus, MS Dhoni, the captain, and Stephen Fleming, the coach will have to reshuffle their line-up to incorporate a replacement for Chahar, which would most likely be Josh Hazlewood or Lungi Ngidi. But, either their inclusion would mean that one foreign spot will get reserved, making things even more complicated for them.
Making things more complicated is the fact that they have the majority of their frontline bowlers, coming from across the borders. Everyone from Imran Tahir, Mitchell Santner, Dwayne Bravo, and the likes are foreign nations, out of whom, only one more will have to be picked if Ngidi, Hazlewood or Bravo have to be there in the majority of matches. While they do flaunt Indian options like Harbhajan Singh and Karn Sharma, given the fact that neither of them are active at the highest level.
