It came across as a shock to most people when Dimuth Karunaratne was made Sri Lanka’s captain ahead of the 2019 World Cup. He replaced Lasith Malinga and there was a sense of waywardness in the assigning. It was largely based on Karunaratne’s success as captain in South Africa where he led the Test team to a historic 2-0 series win.

Sri Lanka have been pretty inconsistent and have had a very up and down time in ODI cricket over the last year or so. One moment, they were brilliant and the other, they struggled and were poor. They had a couple of excellent results in the World Cup but a couple of disappointing ones as well.

But Karunaratne has been good as captain. He’s led the troops well and his batting in ODI cricket has improved a touch as well. Under him, Sri Lanka have won seven out of 11 ODIs and hence, he gets a 7.5.
