Rating the title winning chances of all teams in T20 World Cup 2020

2020 is another World Cup year and this time, it’s in the shortest format. The T20 World Cup returns for the first time since 2016. A lot has changed since that mega-event that took place in India and West Indies made history by becoming the first team to win the World T20 twice – 2012 and then again in 2016.

Australia will be hosting the T20 World Cup for the first time in T20’s shortest career. With relatively big boundaries and conditions slightly more conducive to pace and bounce, the teams all around the will need to keep in mind the conditions before picking their squad. There is a qualifying first-round tournament before the main draw where one team each will fill up the void/empty spot in both Group A and Group B.

With the mega tournament slated to start in October later this year, let’s rate the winning chances of the top eight sides in world cricket. These are the sides that have already qualified for the Super 12.

8. Afghanistan – 5/10

It was only in June 2017 that Afghanistan were given full-member status by the ICC and in January 2019, they qualified for the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 via direct qualification. They finished on the eighth rank on the cut-off date (they are currently seventh) ahead of the likes of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

However, it won’t be easy as they are in the same group as England, India and South Africa. Afghanistan have often shown a lot of promise but they have tended to falter at the big stage. The Asian team has been on the rise, especially in white-ball cricket but they haven’t been able to produce the goods in ICC tournaments.

Afghanistan will be the underdogs. They have some superstars in their line-up – Rashid Khan, Mohammed Nabi, Hazratullah Zazai. But they will need to stand up at crucial stages and handle pressure situations better. Thus, Afghanistan are the least rated side in this list with 5/10.
