A lot has changed since that mega-event that took place in India and West Indies made history by becoming the first team to win the World T20 twice – 2012 and then again in 2016.

With relatively big boundaries and conditions slightly more conducive to pace and bounce, the teams all around the will need to keep in mind the conditions before picking their squad. There is a qualifying first-round tournament before the main draw where one team each will fill up the void/empty spot in both Group A and Group B.

New Zealand are one team that always tend to punch above their weight and do well at the big stage. They constantly make it to the semi-finals and finals (more recently) but then tend to falter. South African cricket has been going through quite a bit both on and off the field. A couple of stalwarts have bid adieu to the game and there are off-field issues as well. There’s a new coaching staff in place and we could well term this South African side as a team in transition.

However, they’ve been playing some very good T20 cricket in recent times. The Proteas drew 1-1 against India back in September. They did lose to England 1-2 but played some excellent cricket and ran close in every game. They’ve come from behind to win a game against the mighty Aussies and hand them their first T20I defeat since the start of 2019.

Quinton de Kock has taken charge of the side while he has a couple of experienced players by his side. The bowling attack looks good and there are murmurs around AB de Villiers’ return. Hence, if he does return, this batting line-up takes a completely different look. Thus, South Africa get an eight on this ratings chart.

There is no consistency as only three players have played 10 or more games (out of 12). Babar Azam has the responsibility of not only leading the side but also carrying the batting line-up. A lot depends on him and his form. Hence, if this continues Pakistan will struggle in the T20 World Cup later this year.

<h3>6. New Zealand – 7.5/10</h3>

New Zealand are one team that always tend to punch above their weight and do well at the big stage. They constantly make it to the semi-finals and finals (more recently) but then tend to falter. Even in the 2016 World T20, they won all their four group stage games but lost to England in the semi-final.
However, it hasn’t been easy for them in the shortest format in the recent past. They’ve won just seven out of the 17 games that they’ve played since January 2019. They’ve been involved in three ties and have lost each of them in the Super Over. Moreover, the Kiwis have faltered from winning positions and thrown matches away.
Thus, they are currently blowing hot and cold in T20I cricket and will be looking to improve in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup. As of now, they get a 7.5 rating but don’t be surprised if they make it to the semi-final.

<h3>5. South Africa – 8/10</h3>

South African cricket has been going through quite a bit both on and off the field. A couple of stalwarts have bid adieu to the game and there are off-field issues as well. There’s a new coaching staff in place and we could well term this South African side as a team in transition.
However, they’ve been playing some very good T20 cricket in recent times. The Proteas drew 1-1 against India back in September. They did lose to England 1-2 but played some excellent cricket and ran close in every game. They’ve come from behind to win a game against the mighty Aussies and hand them their first T20I defeat since the start of 2019.
Quinton de Kock has taken charge of the side while he has a couple of experienced players by his side. The bowling attack looks good and there are murmurs around AB de Villiers’ return. Hence, if he does return, this batting line-up takes a completely different look. Thus, South Africa get an eight on this ratings chart.

<h3>4. West Indies – 8/10</h3>

If you see T20 leagues around the world, you will see a lot of West Indian players taking part. In fact, they are the defending champions and are the only team to win two ICC World T20 titles. There’s absolutely no doubt that T20 is their best format.
However, they have tended to blow hot and cold at the international level in the recent past. The men from the Caribbean haven&#8217;t won a lot since 2019. But at the moment, they have their big stars back. Kieron Pollard has taken over as captain of the white-ball teams and has been impressive.
They boast of a powerful batting line-up. They have the likes of Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer, Kieron Pollard, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell and Chris Gayle hasn’t ruled himself out. The bowling is slightly on the weaker side but if the batting clicks, then it’ll be tough stopping West Indies.

<h3>3. India – 8.5/10</h3>

T20 has been India’s weakest format in the recent past. They did win 5-0 against New Zealand recently but overall, they have been pretty inconsistent. They tend to win bilateral series but they have the fourth-best win-loss ratio (2.0) among the top eight teams since the start of 2019.
But India have done well in ICC tournaments and have reached the semi-final of every ICC tournament since the start of 2013. In fact, they do exceedingly well in the group stages but then falter in the knockouts. Despite being among the favourites, they crashed out in the semi-finals in the 2016 World T20.
At the moment, they have a very good batting line-up but they may be lacking a finisher. With Hardik Pandya’s return, that issue may be resolved. The bowling attack is good as well and they have some excellent death bowlers. Thus, they will be among the favourites to reach the semi-finals but they get a rating of 8.5 which is the third-best.

<h3>2. England – 9/10</h3>

England have gone through a complete overhaul in the way they play white-ball cricket. No team is as fearless as this current England side and they are doing well. They lifted the 2019 World Cup and are now eyeing the T20 World Cup as well.
The Eoin Morgan-led have done very well since January 2019 in the shortest format. They have won nine games (including the Super Over win) out of 12 games. Moreover, they have shown that they have the ability to do well in crunch and pressure situations as well.
England have a fiery batting line-up who keep coming after and attack the opposition all the time. They have the ability to hit sixes at will. In fact, since the last World T20 in 2016, England have the best run-rate – 8.81 among the full-member teams. Moreover, they have a decent bowling attack as well. Thus, they get a 9 on this ratings list.

<h3>1. Australia – 9.5/10</h3>

The T20 World Cup trophy is the only ICC trophy that Australia don’t have in their trophy cabinet. They’ve won each of the other ICC events on multiple occasions but the ICC title in the shortest format is something that’s eluded them for long now. In fact, they have reached the final just once in six tournaments.
However, this time it’s going to be different. With the T20 World Cup being played at home, Australia will fancy their chances. Moreover, they have a strong squad. The Aussies boast of a dynamic and a blistering top-order in the form of Aaron Finch, David Warner and Steve Smith. Glenn Maxwell is likely to take a middle-order spot.
Meanwhile, the bowling wears a formidable look too. Mitchell Starc is one of the best white-ball bowlers while Pat Cummins has been bowling really well. Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar have combined well as a spin duo. They have also been excellent since the start of 2019. Thus, Australia have the team that can lift the trophy and they also know the conditions really well. They are in with a real chance and hence, they get 9.5.
