Ravi Ashwin should come in place of Rohit in the Sydney Test says VVS Laxman
SCG is a spin-friendly surface and thus playing with both their main spinners will give India the advantage.
Former Indian middle-order batsman VVS Laxman has backed Ravichandran Ashwin to replace Rohit Sharma who flew back to India to greet his wife and newborn after becoming a father. The Indian spinner is expected to recover in time from the side strain which kept him away from second and third Test in the ongoing series against Australia.
Sydney Cricket Ground has always offered turn to the spinners throughout the five days, which makes it an exciting prospect as India have two world-class spinners in their ranks in Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin along with a useful part-timer in Hanuma Vihari. However, the final call on the off-spinner’s fitness will be taken only on the morning of the match.
The Hyderabad born former batsman put his money on the Indian team to win the fourth and final Test match of the series in style at SCG and create history. He said Ashwin apart from being a world class spinner has the right batting technique for overseas pitches which can be useful lower down the order and can be an added advantage.
Ashwin has the technique to do well with the bat overseas
“The inclusion of Ravichandran Ashwin will not just strengthen the spin department but also ease some of the burdens on the quicks,” the 44-year-old wrote in his column for The Times Of India.
“As he has shown many times in the past, Ashwin has the technique to do well with the bat overseas. I would back him to make a successful return to the playing XI, just as I would back India to sign off with a win and bring back the Border-Gavaskar trophy in style,” he further added.
Currently, India leads the four-match Test series 2-1 with a match to be played in Sydney which will start on Thursday. If India wins or draws the fourth and last Test match they will create history by winning a Test series for the first time down under.
