While the Indians came up short in the second ODI at Lord’s, thus ensuring the Brits square the series 1-1, there was a sinister milestone achieved by former skipper MS Dhoni. Considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Dhoni stood on the brink of 10,000 ODI runs before he eventually walked out and secured the feat. In spite of the fact that they lost out, it was quite clear that there was indeed a hint of joy when the former skipper reached the mileston.
Having made his debut at the age of 25 against Bangladesh and being dismissed for a duck, Dhoni has certainly come a long way and seen a lot when it comes to competing on the field of play. He was appointed as the captian of the Indian cricket team at a time when the side was going through a difficult period following the sacking of Greg Chappel.
However, despite all of this, he led the Indians to victory in the inaugural edition of the World T20 played in South Africa. Since then, he simply has not looked back.
His finest moment came when he led the Indians to an impressive win in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka. He would go on to win the ICC Champions Trophy a couple of years later before ensuring that the Indians were atop the ICC Test rankings as well. The fact that he has now reached 10,000 ODI runs at an average of 51 is certainly something that is more than commendable, to say the least.
Here is what Bopara had to say:
On his official Twitter account, England cricketer Ravi Bopara said, “Incredible achievement for someone who doesn’t bat in the top 4. Congrats @msdhoni on 10,000 odi runs.”
