Ravi Shastri and Team India support staff to get contract extensions before the World Cup 2019
They are doing an extremely good job.
The Indian team is going to be one of the favourites to win the ICC World Cup in the England and Wales which starts from May 30. The Indian team has become one of the most feared teams in the 50-over format since the last two years and has achieved many things which have gotten them to the second spot in the ICC ODI team rankings.
The Indian team has won the bilateral ODI series in South Africa and Australia for the first time and won the 2018 Asia Cup under Rohit Sharma‘s leadership. Apart from this, they have defeated Sri Lanka and Windies, both at home and away ODI series and have only lost to England in ODI series in the last two years. All this can be credited to the team and the support staff consisting of head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun, batting coach Sanjay Bangar, and fielding coach R Sridhar.
The contract of the Indian team’s coaching staff and support team was supposed come to an end with the conclusion of the ICC World Cup 2019. Also, the BCCI had earlier stated that they will advertise for the new coach’s appointment and all of them will have to go through the process again. But now it seems the coaching staff is likely to be awarded an extension.
Likely to get an extension for the Windies tour
The BCCI and CoA are happy with the work done by the coaching staff and the support team and are inclined to stretch the contract beyond the upcoming World Cup according to Sportstar. Ravi Shastri had taken over from Anil Kumble, whose tenure came to an end after a tiff with captain Virat Kohli in June 2017.
Under Shastri, the Indian team has won its first ever Test series in Australia, after two back-to-back series defeats in South Africa and England last year. Shastri had termed the Australian triumph as greater than the 1983 World Cup feat, which soured some of his teammates who had played a huge part in that epic win.
The support staff is learned to have been sounded to continue with the team for the West Indies tour soon after the World Cup. India will be playing two Tests, three One-Day Internationals and three T20Is.
If the Committee of Administrators (CoA) decides to invite fresh applications for the posts, the current lot would qualify automatically and the process will have to begin before team leaves for World Cup. It has also come to knowledge courtesy of Sportstar, that the authorities may offer the support staff an extension which may last until the 2020 T20 World Cup.
