Ravi Shastri compares Virat Kohli with Sir Vivian Richards and Imran Khan
He also felt that team India is lucky to have a captain like Kohli.
The Indian cricket team has had a fantastic run in recent times, most importantly on their two recent overseas tours to Australia and New Zealand. While captain Virat Kohli has grabbed most of the attention for the historic wins, making all the headlines, little has been spoken of coach Ravi Shastri’s role in the team’s success.
In his latest interview, Shastri explained the evolution of the phenomenon that Kohli is, saying that under him India will keep dominating world cricket. He added how big a feat it was to win three different ICC awards in the same year, and that it will be difficult for anybody else to achieve the same in future.
“Starting with the ICC awards (achieving all awards in the same year), I don’t think anyone will ever do it again. It is something very rare because you need two things to happen to win all awards in a single year. You need to be a captain of a very good cricket team across formats, that allows you to win two awards as the best captain of the ICC Test team and the ICC ODI team. So obviously your team is one of the best in the world and it has never happened in Indian cricket before,” Shastri told Cricbuzz.
India lucky to have a captain like Kohli
Not stopping at that, Ravi Shastri, who has always shared a great rapport with Kohli, compared him to Sir Vivian Richards and Imran Khan. He explained how Virat has a work ethic like no one else, which makes the Indian team lucky to have a captain like him.
“But here is a guy who is as dominant as Sir Vivian Richards. The closest I have seen to the great man. Virat is in your face, he wants to dominate and has a work ethic like no one else. Whether it comes to discipline, training, sacrifice or self-denial, it is unbelievable.
“I think India is lucky to have a leader of that sort. He reminds me of Imran Khan in many ways — in the way he sets the example and sets the standards, and goes about defining it in his own way and leading from the front,” Shastri further said.
