Ravi Shastri displays MS Dhoni’s jersey to fans on a rain-hit day of disappointment
The India vs New Zealand match at Trent Bridge was washed out due to rain.
Indian fans were eager to see the team completing a hat-trick of wins at the ICC World Cup 2019 at Trent Bridge on Thursday where they were supposed to take on New Zealand. However, persistent downpour didn’t even allow the toss to happen and the game was eventually called off, leaving the cricket-lovers disappointed. It was the first washed-out game in this World Cup that featured India and the fourth overall.
After this inconclusive game, India have five points from three games while New Zealand have seven from four. The Black Caps are at the top of the points table now while Virat Kohli‘s men are in the third place. The fans were hoping to see the Indian stars in action but the weather gods left them frustrated. However, they had something to cheer about when India’s head coach Ravi Shastri came out in the balcony of the dressing room and displayed jersey No.7 to the fans.
Jersey No.7 belongs to MS Dhoni and Shastri did that after the fans chanted “Dhoni, Dhoni” from under the balcony of the Indian dressing room. MS Dhoni, 37, is playing in his fourth and final World Cup and has made some impact in both the games that India have played so far. While he gave Rohit Sharma a key partnership with 34 off 46 in the match against South Africa in Southampton, he chipped in with a 14-ball 27 to accelerate in the Indian innings towards the end.
On Sunday, Dhoni will be one of India’s key members in the huge fixture against Pakistan in Manchester. He was the captain of the Indian side that had taken on Pakistan in the last two World Cups (2011 and 2015) and won on both occasions. Apart from him, current captain, Virat Kohli is the only other player in the current team who had played in both those games.
Dhoni recently had a major controversy when his keeping gloves bearing an army insignia came under the scanner of the International Cricket Council which asked the Indian cricket board to get it removed since it didn’t comply to its rules.
