Ravi Shastri had served as the director of the Indian team after the departure of Zimbabwean Duncan Fletcher and Shastri’s contract came to an end by the recently concluded World T20 2016. The former Indian all-rounder expressed his disappointment after losing the Indian head coach snub to Anil Kumble.
Shastri took over after India‘s 1-3 Test series defeat against England in August 2014 and the team had a great run after that – winning the ODI series against England. India reached the semi-final of the World Cup 2015, became the first team to whitewash Australia in Australia in any format (3-0 in T20Is), winning Test series in Sri Lanka after 22 years, beating South Africa in a Test series at home after a long, winning the Asia Cup T20 and progressing to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2016.
BCCI and its Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) that comprised Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, and VVS Laxman, appointed Anil Kumble for the high profile job on Thursday. Kumble is one of the most respected cricketers and the most successful bowler for India. He has 956 international wickets to his name and was also a successful captain. He has also had good stints as a team mentor and administrator over the last few years.
“Yes [I feel disappointed], for the work put in, and results produced in the last 18 months. But if it (tenure) was for only one year then, not really. It is time to move on and do what you do best. I must say I had the ultimate experience with a young and happening side,” Shastri shared his feelings, while speaking to mid-day.
