Reports suggest that the former director of the Indian cricket team Ravi Shastri has announced his intention to resign as a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) committee with immediate effect. The 53-year old former Indian all-rounder narrowly missed out on the coaching job to former Indian skipper Anil Kumble.
As it stands, Shastri’s resignation from the position has nothing to do with the fact that he was overlooked for the India coach job. Further reports also go on to suggest that Shastri had also spoken to the chairman of the ICC, Shashank Manohar about a possible resignation from the post. The letter apparently stated that Shastri had been a member of the committee for quite some time and he believes that it’s necessary for him to take a break from administrative responsibilities and suggested that it may be time for someone else to step in.
Ravi Shastri skipped the ICC committee meeting that was held on the 2nd and 3rd of June at Lords due to his commentary commitments. However, the former Indian team director confirmed that he had tendered his resignation much earlier.
“There is absolutely no conflict of interest. All things have been addressed. There is the ICC Cricket Committee, for which I will not be able to dedicate as much time. However, I see no reason why I cannot continue as its chairman.
“There are other national coaches like Darren Lehmann, Andrew Strauss and (Rahul) Dravid (all work for their respective boards in different positions),” Kumble was quoted as saying.
The final call on the same will be made by the ICC upon the conclusion of the conference.
