The head coach of the Indian team Ravi Shastri has once again slammed the critics of the former Indian skipper MS Dhoni. The veteran was criticised for his slow knock against New Zealand in the second T20I in Rajkot when the team was chasing 197. The former cricketers like Ajit Agarkar and VVS Laxman were of the opinion that Dhoni should retire from the shortest format and he should only concentrate on 50-overs cricket. However, Shastri feels that the people who are criticising the legend should look at their own careers before commenting on him.
Dhoni scored 49 off just 37 deliveries during the chase and it was a laboured knock given the fact that at one stage he was striking at the rate of a run a ball which wasn’t enough. Despite heavy criticism, the captain Virat Kohli and coach had backed him strongly in the media stating him as one of the most important members in the dressing room. Recently, even Dhoni also opined honestly that the views of everyone had to be respected and did not criticise anyone for the comments made on him.
There is no one better than Dhoni
Ravi Shastri was speaking while his visit to Fanattic Sports Museum curated and set up by sports historian Boria Majumdar. He backed Mahi and said that there is no one better than him on the field in the team. “People should look back at their career before commenting on Dhoni. The captain has a lot of cricket left in him and it is the duty of the team to back the legend. “There is no one better than Dhoni on the field given his ability behind the wicket and with the bat and his presence of mind and sharpness on the field,” he told PTI.
He also praised the athleticism of the players on the field and termed the team as the best fielding team in the world. “In terms of fielding, this team is the very best in the world at the moment and that’s something that separates this team from Indian teams of the past. This team always turns up on the park to win. We hope to win the series spread over one and half months before going to South Africa,” Shastri added.
