Ravi Shastri trolled on Twitter after Virat Kohli gifted him a Champagne
Shastri is always on the radar of the social media gimmicks.
India may have won the third Test at Trent Bridge to reduce the gap with England to 2-1 but their head coach Ravi Shastri’s image among fans hasn’t changed much. The only difference is while he was being bashed after India lost, he was being mocked after they won. The mockery came over the champagne bottle that Virat Kohli received as the Man of the Match award in the third Test which his team won by 203 runs.
Kohli’s gesture of handing over the bottle to the coach took the Twitterati by surprise even though it was an act of thanksgiving. The fans pounced upon the two and trolled them, especially the 56-year-old coach who they said is fond of expensive liquors. Some also made fun of Shastri’s ‘broad smile’ on receiving the bottle.
Shastri was bashed after India’s humiliating loss
The trolling also speaks volumes about the dipping popularity of the coach who many accuse of being arrogant and big-mouthed. Shastri was brutally bashed after India was hammered at Lord’s by an innings and 159 runs and there were calls to rope in former Indian captain Rahul Dravid as the senior team’s coach. Dravid has been a successful coach with the Indian colts, even guiding the Under-19 team to win the World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year.
Shastri took over from former captain Anil Kumble last year following a reported rift between the latter and Kohli and though his period saw the Indian side winning in the sub-continent, they are yet to win a series outside it. India lost an away Test series against South Africa 1-2 earlier this year and even though they won the ODI leg of the tour by 5-1, they lost the ODI series to England 1-2 after trumping them in the shortest format.
He had said before the start of the series that India came to England to dominate them and to not just put up a fight. But the results in the first two Tests showed that the team’s performance was at a sea-wide distance from the coach’s words.
