Tamil Nadu wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has become an overnight sensation in the country after pulling India out from the jaws of defeat in the final of the Nihadas Trophy 2018 in Colombo, by playing a superhuman-like innings at the end. India needed 5 runs off the last ball to win the game, and in such a situation, when most batsmen would fail to score a boundary under pressure, Karthik went for a six as India lifted the tri-series trophy.

Following this, team coach Ravi Shastri had a special message for him on Twitter, Shastri wrote, “No game is over till the fat lady sings. DK, you beauty!” Karthik was so eager to take India to victory that he was upset when Vijay Shankar was sent to bat ahead of him, revealed captain Rohit Sharma himself.

“When I got out, I went and sat in the dugout and he was quite upset that he didn’t bat at six. But I told him: I want you to bat and finish off the game for us, because whatever skill you have, it will be required in the last three or four overs.” Rohit revealed after the match.

Karthik is considered an ideal replacement for Dhoni

In times when MS Dhoni’s form is slowly waning, pundits opine that Karthik should be made a regular over Dhoni in the limited-overs set-up as he is quite handy with the gloves too. Besides, he does not lack experience too. The 32-year-old made his international debut even before MS Dhoni did. The innings from the final – which was laced by four fours and three sixes – further makes his case for a regular finisher in the Indian team.

Karthik’s next major assignment will be with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been named as the captain of the team that previously won two titles under Gautam Gambhir’s leadership. The tournament begins on April 7 in Mumbai and Kolkata play their first game against RCB on April 8.
