There was a time when Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja’s place in the Indian side seemed irreplaceable, but things change with time. In an attempt to rest the seniors taking their workload into consideration, the selectors found a sparkling combination in Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. But now, both these guys seem to have confirmed their place for some more time, making the senior pros wait for their chance.
Ever since MSK Prasad was appointed as the head of the selection committee, the rotation policy is one thing that making the headlines often. This is the process of trying out all the permutations and combinations before they build a core side which will enter the World Cup in 2019. Whilst few senior cricketers backlashed at it, it makes an awful lot of sense to check out the bench strength.
We seek more variety in the attack
If reports in Sportstar are to be believed, both Jadeja and Ashwin have been dropped from the side only to check out the depth and variety in the spin department. “We all respect what Ashwin and Jadeja have accomplished so far. But, we need to look at the future and are seeking more variety in the attack,” said a senior selection committee member.
Since both Jadeja and Ashwin being finger spinners, the selection committee was keen to test some wrist spinners in the side. “The two wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were picked because they are different. Both are talented and have done extremely well so far. They bring a lot to the attack,” He added.
He observed, “We won the ODI series against Sri Lanka 5-0 and then defeated Australia 4-1 in the one-dayers. Kuldeep and Chahal, particularly against Australia, played a big part. It would be very unfair on our part to drop them at this stage. It would hurt their confidence.”
The senior official involved in the selection process, who chose to not disclose his identity, also heaped praises on Washington Sundar, who has been performing exceedingly well in the Ranji Trophy currently. He also said that Sundar might soon get a call-up from the NCA to undergo few Tests.
“We know he has potential. We are monitoring his progress. He is still only 18 and playing Ranji Trophy for Tamil Nadu is a learning experience in itself for Washington. He is on our minds. He might be called soon to undergo another test at the NCA,” He concluded.
