Ravichandran Ashwin reveals his superstitious side
He also went on to say that the team was confident of chasing 194 at Edgbaston.
Cricketers are known for their superstitions. It is one particular thing that they are very fastidious about believing that it kills all the ‘ill-luck’ that is associated with the game. And while India were struggling to reach a moderate target of 194 at Edgbaston to take a lead over England in the five-game Test series, ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also had a similar fallacy to stick to, though the condition was not suitable.
After the match which India eventually lost by 31 runs, Ashwin spoke on the superstition part, saying when Hardik Pandya hit a boundary during the chase, he was in the bathroom and as per superstition, he would have chosen to stick to that place to see that India’s good luck with the bat persisted for a little more time. But it was tough for him as it is not the best place to be in.
“At one stage, Hardik hit a boundary and I was in the bathroom and I can’t hold up there for a long time. You will find your spots in the dressing room in these sorts of occasions,” Ashwin said in the press conference as the reporters burst into laughter.
We were confident of chasing
Ravichandran Ashwin said that the team was confident when Dinesh Karthik accompanied in-form captain Virat Kohli to resume India’s chase on Day 4, adding that the wicket-keeper’s early dismissal was a crucial blow. Kohli also did not add much to his overnight score and was trapped before the wickets by Ben Stokes. Pandya came up with a 31-run-knock hitting four boundaries but could not take India home and the visitors lost a match they could have won.
The off-spinner, however, had a good match with seven wickets as he castled England’s Alastair Cook with similar kind of deliveries in both the innings. He also kept them under check but apart from Kohli, no other Indian batsmen could capitalise on the bowlers’ efforts.
