Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was found guilty of deliberately running on the pitch during India’s first Innings of the 3rd Test against New Zealand at Indore. He received two informal warning early in his innings. On repeating it again he was then officially warned by umpire Kumar Dharmasena for running on the danger area.
A few overs later, Jadeja was found running in the danger area yet again. This time, it was the umpire Bruce Oxenford who caught him. Oxenford decided to penalize India by 5 runs and gave a final warning to Jadeja. As a result, when New Zealand came out to bat in the first Innings, they had 5 runs credited to their account even before a ball was bowled.
Match referee David Boon fined Ravindra Jadeja 50 per cent of his match fees and also handed him 3 demerit points. The rules for handling demerit points were revised in September and came into effect on 22 September. In accordance with Article 7.3 of the revised Code, in addition to the fine imposed for his breach of Article 2.2.11, three demerit points have been added to Jadeja’s disciplinary record.
According to the rules, if a player reaches a limit of 4 demerit points in a period of 24 months, he can be handed a suspension. Ravindra Jadeja was found breaching the level 2 breach of the Code of Conduct. Any offense in the level 2 breach carries a fine of 50 percent to 100 percent of the match fees.
