Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had sweet revenge for their loss in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 and their previous encounter of this season against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Wednesday in Hyderabad as they choked the defending champions and clinched a 6-wicket win. The victory brought Kane Williamson’s side back into the race for a playoff spot after they lost three games in a row. However, the match played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal saw the return of the ghost of dubious umpiring.
The incident happened in the final over of the CSK innings after Suresh Raina, who chipped in as the captain in the absence of an injured Mahendra Singh Dhoni, won the toss and elected to bat. Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a short ball that went over the shoulder of Ravindra Jadeja, who was on strike, and he wanted to know whether it was a valid one since he was convinced that the previous delivery bowled had been signalled as “one for the over”.
However, the umpires (Ian Gould was the other) decided that it was a fair delivery and Jadeja, who walked down the pitch asking the umpire about it, was visibly not happy. Ambati Rayudu, the non-striker, was also seen asking the umpire whether the delivery was valid. The CSK had a disappointing batting performance as they managed only 132 for 5 in their 20 overs, thanks to some superb bowling from the SRH bowlers, particularly spinner Rashid Khan who took two wickets for 17.
Jadeja was found engaged in another controversy against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur last week when the umpire, Ulhas Gandhe – who was officiating in that game as well – goofed up in calling a waist-high delivery as “no”. He signalled the delivery to be invalid but moments later, withdrew from his decision. Jadeja was at the non-striker’s end on that occasion and protested the umpire’s call. Even CSK captain Dhoni was seen walking into the ground to challenge the umpires over the call.
