RCB players and international women cricketers to play an exhibition match
The date and venue of the exhibition game are yet to be decided.
As part of a campaign launched by Royal Challenge Sports Drink, there will be a unique mixed gender T20 exhibition game, in which few players from the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team and a few international women cricketers will take part. The likes of Virat Kohli, Harmanpreet Kaur and Mithali Raj are expected to be the big names in the game. Fans can vote to support the campaign online.
Speaking on the game and on breaking stereotypes, the RCB skipper said that cricket sees no gender, and both men and women have equal rights in sports. He further urged fans to not look at women cricketers as mere adjuncts to men’s cricket.
“Be it men or women, cricket is one game, and I want to urge fans to break the boundaries that exist in their mind that divides the sport by gender. Equality in sports is ultimately a reflection of equality in life, and if we want a better tomorrow, then we need to say #ChallengeAccepted and start breaking down all stereotypes,” Kohli stated in a press release.
Inequality in salaries
The captain of the women’s team, Mithali Raj too spoke about the campaign, saying that although Indian women’s cricket has been acknowledged ever since their World Cup campaign in 2017 in England, there still remains a lot of inequality when you compare the coverage and salary of both men and women cricket.
“Over the recent years, women’s cricket has made a lot of progress in terms of earning respect from fans and experts, but the playing field is still not equal. The true difference is seen when there is parity in opportunities, salaries, coverage and fan support,” Mithali said.
The date and venue of the exhibition game are yet to be decided.
