‘Really wanted to score a century’ – Shubman Gill recalls match-winning 91 at the Gabba
Shubman Gill made his Test debut against Australia last year.
While the Indian cricket team has registered many Test series wins over the years, not many can come near their 2-1 triumph against Australia earlier this year. All the odds were against the visiting team as big guns like Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and even skipper Virat Kohli had to leave the series midway due to different reasons. However, the youngsters put up a phenomenal show and stunned the Aussies in their own backyard.
Shubman Gill, who made his Test debut during the second game of the series, also played a pivotal role in taking India to glory. His best performance in that series came in the fourth and deciding Test at the Gabba in Brisbane. Chasing 328 for victory, India lost veteran opener, Rohit Sharma, with just 18 runs on board. However, Gill put up an exhibition of high-class batting and scored runs all over the park.
He even looked set to score his maiden Test hundred but fell prey to Nathan Lyon for 91. Shubman was disappointed after missing the milestone, and so was his father, Lakhwinder Gill, who said that the right-handed batsman should have reached three figures. Recalling the dismissal, Gill accepted being gutted, but also said he was satisfied after India crossed the line.
I was pretty disappointed: Shubman Gill
“To be honest, I really wanted to score a century and see my team through. Honestly, very very disappointed at the way I got out and he (Gill’s father) also told me the same thing that you should have got a century. I was pretty disappointed and I can see he is also disappointed, but the good thing that was we want the Test match. If we would have drawn or loss, it would have been even more devastating,” Gill said on The Grade Cricketer.
Meanwhile, Gill is currently gearing up for the ICC Word Cup championship final against New Zealand. The summit clash gets underway on June 18 at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. India, the No. 2 ranked team in the ICC Test rankings, has been doing exceptionally well in red-ball cricket lately and would be determined to clinch the prestigious title.
