The two One-Day Internationals played on Sunday witnessed big hitting from the batsmen of all the four teams. Over 1200 runs were scored collectively in the India-Australia and England-Windies ODI games where a total of 43 sixes were hit during the day. The Indore ODI between India and Australia saw a score of 293 being chased down comfortably while England posted a mammoth 369 against Windies at Bristol and restricted the visitors to just 245.
Aaron Finch’s 124-run knock that comprised of five sixes helped Australia reach a decent total of 293 on a belter of a track while David Warner and Marcus Stoinis hit one six each. India’s chase began in a destructive fashion as Rohit Sharma sent the ball over the fence on four occasions. Rohit’s 103 meter six was the highlight of the game as the ball was dispatched outside the park by the Indian opener. Hardik Pandya took on Aston Agar by smashing the left-arm spinner to four sixes and extended the match tally to 15 sixes.
While at Bristol, Moeen Ali struck eight sixes during his quickfire ton which came off just 53 balls. The left-hander, who was on 39 off 39 balls hit 61 runs in the next 14 balls he faced with eight sixes including four in a row. The other England batters hit seven sixes as Ben Stokes hit three and Joe Root blew a couple. Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes added one each to the tally of 15 sixes by England players.
Despite ending way behind the England total, Windies did give England a good competition in terms of sixes as they hit a total of 13 with Chris Gayle smashing six of them. Captain Jason Holder hit three, Evin Lewis hit a couple while Jason Mohammed and Rovman Powell hit one each to take the match sixes tally to 28; a record in an ODI in England.
The 43 sixes hit during the day are the 2nd most number of sixes hit in a day in ODI cricket as 45 sixes were hit on 4th February in 2007. The 45 sixes record was possible on that day since six ODI games were played on that day out of which three were a part of the World Cup qualifiers. Two ODIs played on 3rd February in 2016 recorded 39 sixes while the 2013 ODI between India-Australia at Bangalore witnessed 38 sixes, the 4th most number of sixes in a single day in ODIs.
