'Remarkable run chase' - Zimbabwe stun Bangladesh with thrilling win in ODI series opener

The three-match ODI series between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh kicked off on August 5, Friday, and the hosts won a thriller. Zimbabwe came into the series on the back of a 2-1 series win in the T20Is against the Asian side. And now, they started off the ODI series by winning the opener by five wickets. Zimbabwe skipper Regis Chakabva won the toss and put Bangladesh in to bat first. Tamim Iqbal’s side put up a supreme batting performance as all their top four batters Iqbal, Liton Das, Anamul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim, scored over 50 runs. Liton top-scored with 81 runs off 89 balls, before eventually walking out retired hurt. The Bangla Tigers posted a strong total of 303 for the loss of only two wickets in 50 overs. Innocent Kaia, Sikandar Raza steer Zimbabwe to a historic win Zimbabwe had a sloppy start as they lost their openers, Chakabva for two runs, and Tarisai Musakanda for four runs. The partnership between Innocent Kaia and Wesley Madhevere steadied the ship, adding 56 runs together after the side lost two wickets for only six runs. Madhevere was dismissed for 19 runs off 27 balls and the hosts were on 62 for the loss of three wickets after 13.1 overs. Then came the mammoth partnership between Kaia and Sikandar Raza, who added 192 runs for the fourth wicket. Kaia smashed 11 fours and two sixes and got out for a spectacular 110 off 122 balls. At this point, Zimbabwe were on 254 for the loss of four wickets and needed 50 runs off 49 balls. The match was well and truly within the grasp of Zimbabweans with Raza and Luke Jongwe at the crease. Jongwe played a good hand, scoring 24 runs off 19 balls, and departed in the 48th over with the side needing only eight runs off 17 balls. The day, however, belonged to Raza who scored an unbeaten 135 runs off 109 balls with eight fours and six sixes. He, along with Milton Shumba, finished off the match with 10 balls to spare. Unsurprisingly, Raza was named the Player of the Match award. The second ODI is set to happen at the same venue on August 7.
