The Indian team is currently on a high after winning the Asia Cup by defeating Bangladesh in a close final. The more the ODI team looks settled, the Team India is struggling in the longer format overseas. Despite faring well in the recent England series, they lost it by 1-4. However, after Ravi Ashwin failing to dictate terms on a deteriorating pitch in Southampton, the BCCI is pondering over strengthening the coaching staff by adding a spin-bowling coach.
India’s ace off-spinner in Tests started the series with a bang by picking four wickets on the first day of the opening game at Edgbaston. But as the contest progressed, he faded away and eventually got injured only for Ravindra Jadeja to come in and do well with both bat and ball. The problem of the Indian spinners struggling away from home is likely to be solved soon it seems.
Will it work?
According to the reports in Mumbai Mirror, after Ravi Shastri met the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrator (CoA) ahead of the Asia Cup, the possibility of picking the spin-bowling coach was discussed. The team’s coaching staff includes the batting coach Sanjay Bangar, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar apart from Shastri.
The appointment of spin bowling coach will only strengthen the staff but it will be argued if the move will work. Also, it will be interesting to see who will be tipped to do the job with India’s one of the best former spinner Sunil Joshi working with Bangladesh team and has made the difference to them.
It is very much possible that the spin coach will be selected before the Indian team embarks on the Australia tour in November. They are scheduled to play 3 T20Is, four Tests and three One-Day Internationals during their stay Down Under.
