In what can be called a major development, Indian batting legend VVS Laxman is likely to become the new head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The crucial position was previously held by another batting great Rahul Dravid. As Dravid was recently named the head coach of the national team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would need a new candidate to take over the crucial role at NCA.
If reports are to be believed, BCCI president Sourav Gangly is keen to bring Laxman in the picture. After all, the former cricketer is one of the finest Test batters to have represented the nation. Interestingly, Ganguly has always spoken about the need to have former cricketers in the system to help the game grow. Hence, one might see Laxman stepping into Dravid’s shoes at the NCA.
VVS Laxman is undoubtedly a front runner for the role: BCCI official
“Sourav and Jay both would love to have Laxman take up the NCA role. But yes, the final call obviously lies with the former India cricketer as he has a young family also. He is undoubtedly a front runner for the role and not to forget how he has been known to share a special bond with now coach Dravid,” the BCCI source was quoted as saying by Times Now News.
“It will be the perfect combination to have those two work together towards taking Indian cricket forward. Nothing like having former cricketers coming on board to help produce the next generation of stars,” he added. Meanwhile, it would be interesting to see if Laxman, who has been an active commentator after retirement, will agree to take the role or not.
Speaking of Rahul Dravid, the legendary batter will take over the reins from the outgoing Ravi Shastri after the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021. Commenting on his appointment, Dravid said he’s looking forward to build on the base that Shastri created.
“It is an absolute honour to be appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team and I am really looking forward to this role. Under Shastri, the team has done very well, and I hope to work with the team to take this forward. Having worked closely with most of the boys either at NCA, U19, and India A setup, I know they have the passion and desire to improve every day,” Dravid had said.
