India Test discards Murali Vijay and Karun Nair recently expressed their disappointment over their axing from the team and alleged that there was no communication on behalf of the team management or selection committee. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now decided to haul up the duo as they breached the central contract by making such remarks.
Vijay was dropped after the third Test against England while Nair was left out for the Windies series after travelling as a tourist for the entire tour. The chief selector MSK Prasad earlier said that he had a chat with Nair after he was ignored for the Windies Tests while he was surprised to see Vijay alleging about lack of communication.
On October 4, the axed opener said no one from the team management nor even the selectors spoke to him after he was dropped. Vijay also went on to say that it is important for a player to know the reason for being left out of the team so that he can make an assessment of his stand.
A breach of central contract
“Vijay and Karun didn’t exactly do the right thing by speaking on selection policy. That is a breach of central contract. As per the central contract, no player can speak about a just-concluded tour for 30 days. There is a COA (Committee of Administrators) meeting in Hyderabad on October 11 and this issue will be raised there,” a senior BCCI official, who chose to speak on the condition of anonymity, was quoted as saying by Times Now.
Dismissing Vijay’s allegations, CoA chief Vinod Rai told the media on the sidelines of a CoA meeting on Saturday that the selection committee works independently and that they left it on the selectors to deal with the two players’ statements.
The selection panel also regretted Vijay’s remarks more since he is a senior member. One official said had the batsman not been kept in the loop, then he wouldn’t have played for Essex after the England series. The BCCI has sought an explanation from the 36-year-old opener over his remark.
