Reports: England to drop Ollie Robinson for 2nd Test against New Zealand following his old racist and sexist tweets controversy
Robinson's old sexist and racist tweets have come back to haunt him.
England pacer Ollie Robinson made his international debut a couple of days ago in the ongoing first Test against New Zealand. It was a good day for him as he sent back Tom Latham and Ross Taylor early and was the best bowler for the hosts on the day. However, the glory turned sour soon after the end of day’s play as by then, Robinson’s old sexist and racist tweets had gone public.
The cricketer even apologised for the same while addressing the media and admitted that it was a mistake on his part. Moreover, Robinson also claimed that he is not sexist or racist. Rather his ex-teammate and roommate Moin Ashraf came out in support while suggesting others to move on from the incident.
However, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) isn’t taking the incident lightly for the day both England and New Zealand shared a ‘moment of unity’, questions have been raised if they are really seriously about the existing discrimination issue in cricket. It is understood that they have launched an investigation into the matter.
Ollie Robinson’s career could come to a screeching halt, for the time being, after the first match as he is likely to be dropped from the second Test against New Zealand according to a report in The Telegraph. “On the biggest day of my career so far, I am embarrassed by the racist and sexist tweets that I posted over eight years ago, which have today become public. I want to make it clear that I’m not racist and I’m not sexist,” he had said in a statement.
Ollie Robinson picked 4 wickets in first innings
Meanwhile, the 28-year-old tall pacer was the best bowler for England in the first innings. He picked a total of four wickets conceding 75 after sending down 28 overs. He will have a crucial role to play on the third day of the Test with the bat in the absence of Chris Woakes. The second and final Test between England and New Zealand is set to commence on June 10 in Edgbaston.
