Reports: ICC unlikely to entertain BCCI’s proposal to ban Pakistan from World Cup
Earlier, Rai cleared that they will be sending a letter to the ICC raising concerns about Pakistan.
The Indian cricket board has found itself in a tricky situation on the issue of playing Pakistan in the upcoming World Cup in the wake of the terror attack in Pulwama on February 14. While there is an increasing pressure over the officials to boycott the clash with Pakistan at the Old Trafford and even approach the ICC seeking ouster of them from the tournament, not many are convinced that such measures will pay off.
The BCCI has thus left the final decision on playing Pakistan in the WC to the government. A report in India Today has revealed the ICC hinting at the BCCI’s proposal to get Pakistan ousted from the WC hitting a wall, something that inside sources in the board had also said. India are scheduled to meet their arch-rivals on June 16 in what will be their seventh encounter on the mega stage.
June 16 till some time away
The BCCI and the Committee of Administrators (CoA) that runs it had a long meeting in New Delhi on Friday over seeking advice from various ministries of the government over playing the arch-rivals at the WC. “16th June [India vs Pakistan match in World Cup] is very far away. We will take a call on that much later and in consultations with the government,” COA chairman Vinod Rai said, according to India Today.
“We’ll write to ICC expressing our concerns about attacks that took place & that security of players, officials & everybody else must be taken care of. We’re telling the cricketing community that in future we must sever ties with nations from where terror emanates,” he further added.
The BCCI is also likely to consult the Indian team itself before taking a final call and the words of captain Virat Kohli, coach Ravi Shastri and senior member MS Dhoni will also be heard, India Today said. BCCI CEO Rahul Johri is expected to have a word with the ICC on the matter on February 26.
