Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) surprised many at the start of the last Indian Premier League (IPL) with their fearless approach. But as the tournament progressed, they couldn’t continue in the same vein and in the end, failed to qualify for the playoffs. The repercussions of the same are being felt now as the franchise has asked to leave the head coach Brad Hodge.
According to the reports in Bangalore Mirror, Hodge has been dismissed from his position and there are expected to be more changes in the staff. The board meeting of the franchise will take place in the next few days in which some tough decisions are expected to be taken. In the previous season, Virender Sehwag worked as the mentor of the team and it remains to be seen if he will be appointed at the helm to replace Hodge.
Team’s performance
KXIP was one of the most talked about teams in the first half of the competition this year. The likes of Ravi Ashwin, Chris Gayle, KL Rahul all performed and won matches for them single-handedly. They were being tipped to even win the tournament. But the second half of the IPL proved to be a disaster for them. They couldn’t win games when it mattered and the captaincy of Ashwin was also questioned.
Though they stayed in the hunt for the playoffs, it became almost impossible for them to qualify thanks to their worst net run-rate. In the end, they ended up at the seventh position only above the Delhi Daredevils (DD) which very few expected.
With the new coach though, the franchise will be keen to do well in the next season and possibly win the tournament for the first time in their history.
