Reports: Muttiah Muralitharan likely to become Governor of Northern Province in Sri Lanka

Muttiah Muralitharan, the former Sri Lankan spinner has hogged the spotlight with the reports that he is going to become the governor of the Northern Province. The rife speculations have emerged because he is close to the Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who has recently won the Presidential elections held in the country.

The 47-year-old is regarded as one of the best spinners in the history of cricket. In his time in international cricket, he grabbed more than 1300 wickets across all the formats. He was also the part of the Sri Lankan team that won the World Cup 1996.

TNA confirms Muttiah Muralitharan’s post isn’t confirmed

It is reported that Murali will most likely join Rajapaksa presidency as the governor of the Northern Province that holds a huge majority of Sri Lankan Tamils. And, the former player has received a lot of criticism. The reason behind the heat of the public is because of Murali’s stand on war crimes against the Tamils when Gotabaya was the Defence Minister of the country.

A senior Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader recited that the news has already been leaked. The government is now checking the mood of the public. Murali would be given some post, but it is not yet confirmed. However, he could be picked as the ambassador of the party.

“The news is already leaked. Perhaps, the government is testing the mood. Since there is already so much opposition, he may not be made a Governor. He may get something else. Maybe an Ambassadorial post,” senior TNA leader said as quoted by News18.

The 47-year-old made his debut back in 1992 and went into play for more than 18 years donning the Sri Lankan jersey. He is the only bowler in the history, who scalped 800 wickets in Test cricket. Also, he took 198 wickets in ODIs. During his playing days, often he was tipped with controversy over his bowling action but was cleared from all the claims that were being made over his bowling arm. He bid adieu to cricket back in 2010, after reaching the 800-wicket milestone in Tests.
