Virat Kohli’s pre-departure press conference ahead of the South Africa tour in December shocked many wherein he contradicted BCCI President Sourav Ganguly‘s statement regarding captaincy. Kohli didn’t hold back in the presser and refuted claims of Ganguly who had stated that he told the 33-year-old personally to not step down as India’s T20I captain.
However, Kohli cleared that there was no such communication with him hinting at a total miscommunication in terms of him quitting T20I captaincy and then being removed as ODI skipper. After the press conference, it was first reported that chief selector Chetan Sharma will address the media on the same evening only for it to be cancelled later.
Meanwhile, India Today has reported that Sourav Ganguly wanted to issue a show-cause notice to Virat Kohli after the explosive press conference. But the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah intervened in the matter as the team was on a high-profile South Africa and the entire saga would’ve had a negative impact on the side.
Chetan Sharma had contradicted Kohli’s statements
While no step was taken from the BCCI at the time, chief selector Chetan Sharma was bombarded with the questions when he addressed media to announce the ODI squad for South Africa tour. He had then stated that all members in the meeting had asked Virat Kohli to reconsider his decision to quit as T20I captain ahead of the World Cup.
“It was told to Virat for the sake of Indian cricket to continue as captain by everybody available in the meeting — all conveners were there, the board officials were there. Everyone told him, who will not tell? When suddenly you get such news, you are in shock as it’s a matter of the World Cup,” Sharma had said then.
However, he had clearly rubbished any reports of rift between Kohli and the newly appointed white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli also resigned from Test captaincy after losing the South Africa series and will be featuring for India only as a player across all formats after seven years.
