While Team India enters the Champions Trophy 2017 as one of the favourites, not everything is going right in the Indian dressing room, especially between captain Virat Kohli and coach Anil Kumble. Post the warm-up game against Bangladesh at the Oval on Tuesday evening, there were scenes of cold vibes between the two at the nets. Just when Kumble approached the nets, Kohli walked away as per reports in Mumbai Mirror.
While it is still not clear what went wrong between the two protagonists of the rift, rumour had it that the two didn’t share the same wavelength on including young chinaman Kuldeep Yadav in the India-Australia series. Also, in another news, it was said that even the BCCI officials have problems with Kumble since he asked for an unjustified raise for himself and the team.
But differences over team selection cannot be so serious that they can lead to the fallout between the two most important people in the Indian team. Meanwhile, veterans from the game have been giving their own opinions on the controversy.
Veterans give their views
Former Indian batsman and legend Sunil Gavaskar feels that no captain and coach can always have the same thoughts in decision making, which is why a rift is natural and the media need not blow it out of proportion.
“I don’t think this should be taken seriously, this kind of discussion is in fact healthy. Coach should be somebody who is good for Indian cricket. He should have a vision for Indian cricket which would carry Indian cricket forward for the next 8 to 10 years,” Gavaskar said.
On the other hand, former Indian offie Harbhajan Singh also had his say on the issue, but was more in favour of Anil Kumble, saying he is a man of respect and would never invite problems with anyone.
“If someone has issues with Kumble, he should go and talk to him because he’s a person of respect and as per my experience, he can’t have issues with anyone,” Bhajji said.
