Ricky Ponting to be inducted into Sport Australia Hall of Fame: Ricky Ponting, one of the greatest batsmen to have played the game and Australia’s most successful captain, will be the 4th Australian cricketer, after Sir Don Bradman, Steve Waugh and Shane Warne to be inducted into this unique club of greatest achievers for Australia in sports.
With the athlete in consideration must be retired for at least 2 years, it is not a surprise that Ricky Ponting will be awarded in the earliest opportunity. Considering the mountains of records he holds, including the highest run scorer in Tests and ODIs (13,378, 13589), most centuries(41,29) for Australia and not to mention, leading Australia to two consecutive World Cup victories, he outstrips most of his fellow country-mates in terms of numbers, and the award is well deserved.
Even post his retirement, he has been heavily involved in cricket. He successfully coached Mumbai Indians to an unbelievable title win despite having poorest of poor starts. Consequently, seeing his worth in management responsibilities, Cricket Australia have been very keen to involve him in coaching roles.
“Cricket Australia are trying to get me involved in coaching in some way, shape or form,” Ponting told News Corp.
“It’s been spoken about over the last couple of months.”
After a 17-year international career, Ponting currently manages his coaching role in IPL along with Big Bash League commentary role with Network TEN and family duties with wife Rianna and three young children Emmy, 7, Matisse, 4, and Fletcher, 1.
Former wicketkeeper, long-time teammate and fellow BBL commentator Adam Gilchrist will induct Ponting into the Hall of Fame at Wednesday’s induction and awards gala.
