Delhi and Himachal Pradesh are currently locking horns in the Ranji Trophy-match at Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi. After the hosts racked up 317 runs, Prashant Chopra and Co well and truly found themselves behind the 8-ball, having lost their first six wickets for 58. However, Rishi Dhawan scored 64 runs from 114 balls to mitigate the damage to some extent, if not a whole lot.
He put forth a stand of 95 runs with Ekant Sen to inject some momentum into the Himachal innings. In the end, the visitors ended the day at 216 runs and thereby are still behind by 101 runs in the first innings from Delhi’s score. Ekant fell for 46 runs off 71 deliveries and following Dhawan’s dismissal in the 58th over, the rest of the batters have to stand tall and reduce the lead further.
Dhawan succumbs to an unfortunate dismissal
However, Himachal could’ve been in a better position had the on-field umpires been a bit more accurate. And the mistake led to the wicket of Dhawan. Left spin bowler Varun Sood bowled from around the wicket and churned a full delivery. The batsman tried to make a forward push and stave off the delivery. But the ball turned away, beat the bat, however, didn’t make contact with the bat.
The ball had a fair amount of bite and it exploded off the pitch. Wicketkeeper Ankush Bains was taken by surprise and the ball ricocheted from his body into the palms of Gautam Gambhir, who went on to his left and grasped the red cherry. The umpire had no hesitation and raised his finger. The Delhi cricketers were cock-a-hoop as they knew the significance of getting the big fish.
The decision didn’t go down well with Dhawan by any stretch of the imagination. He stood on the pitch for a while, showing dissent to the call. He also vented his frustration by smacking both his gloves with each other. While returning back to the pavilion, he also hit his bat hard with the gloves.
