Former Australian cricketer Rod Marsh has been taken to a Queensland hospital after suffering a serious heart attack. The ex-wicketkeeper, 74, was in Bundaberg for an event for the Bulls Masters charity group. As per reports, he sustained the attack midway through the event and was rushed to hospital by organizers John Glanville and David Hillier.

A veteran of 96 Test matches, Rod was a vital cog of the Australian team in the 80s and 90s. He also served Cricket Australia as the chairman of selectors. With Rod being such a prominent figure in the cricket circle, the news of him suffering a heart attack spread like wildfire. Subsequently, wishes and greetings poured in from different corners.

Meanwhile, Bulls Masters boss Jimmy Maher revealed that Marsh wouldn’t have made it, had there been any further delay in admitting him. “John and Dave deserve so much credit because the doctor said if they had waited for an ambulance he would not have made it,” Maher told News Corp.

“Rod landed at 10.05 am and rang me from the car at about 10.30. He said he could not wait to have a beer with me. Then soon [after] Dave rang me from the car and told me what had happened. It’s devastating,” he added.

Cricket Australia sent their wishes to Rod Marsh

Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley also expressed his concern over Rod’s health. “We are very concerned to hear the news about Rod and send him all our best wishes. Our thoughts are with him, his wife Ros and their family and many friends at this difficult time. Rod is one of the most iconic and popular figures in the game and we thank and acknowledge those who are looking after him,” he was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Meanwhile, Marsh represented Australia between 1970 and 1984, effecting a total of 479 dismissals behind the stumps in international cricket. He also scored over 4,500 runs at the highest level.
