'Rohit for T20I captaincy' - Twitter wants Rohit Sharma to be T20I skipper after he takes over captaincy in death overs
With Kohli out of the field in the last four overs, Rohit's captaincy saved the day for India.
On Thursday, India levelled the ongoing T20I series against England, by winning the close encounter in the fourth match. England needed 46 runs from the last four overs, with Ben Stokes and Eoin Morgan at the crease. Indian captain Virat Kohli had to leave the field after aggravating his quadriceps muscle a little bit and didn’t want it to turn into a niggle.
In the absence of him on the field, Rohit Sharma, the vice-captain, took over the charge of the team. After this point, the match turned towards India and Sharma’s captaincy was praised by the fans on Twitter. This also saw fans asking for Rohit to be made the T20I captain, considering his ability to handle the team in tough situations like this.
Sharma has been undoubtedly the best captain in the Indian Premier League. Under his leadership, Mumbai Indians have won five titles since 2013, when he took the captaincy. Kohli, on the other hand, has led his franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore since 2012 but never managed to help them to a title triumph. This has always made Twitter fans demand that the Mumbai player should be made the T20I captain.
Some fans on Twitter called Rohit a better captain in the shortest format and called for him to permanently take over the reins of the T20I side. The Mumbai batsman had also led India to an Asia Cup title back in 2018. Under his captaincy, India also won the Nidahas Trophy 2018.
Bring Rohit Sharma as captain, feels Twitter
On Thursday, until Kohli was on the field leading the team, the match seemed to be slipping out of India’s hands. Only when Rohit took over the charge, the tide turned towards the Indian team. India eventually won the match. Shardul Thakur’s 17th over, saw Stokes and Morgan both falling on successive balls to help India win the important match. Had India lost the match, the series would have gone to England. But the win has now taken the series to the final match, which will be played on Saturday.
Between Kohli and Sharma, India has found two solid leaders who can make the important calls, when required. Even though the Twitterati has been demanding that Sharma should be made the captain, it is unlikely that Kohli will quit the leadership or be axed, as the Indian team have produced some outstanding results in limited-overs cricket.
