Rohit Sharma has certainly made a jaw-dropping start to his captaincy tenure in international cricket. Ever since taking over the full-time role, the veteran opener has led India in 14 matches across formats and took the side to win every single time. The recently-concluded two-match Test series against Sri Lanka marked Rohit’s first leadership assignment in the longest format and the 34-year-old embraced the challenge.

He was spot-on with his tactics and decision-making as India won both matches pretty comfortably. Needless to mention, Rohit’s captaincy has been earning praises from different corners. Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer is among many to laud the 34-year-old’s leadership skills. While doing so, however, Jaffer made a bold statement. He reckons Rohit can be a better Test skipper than his predecessor Virat Kohli, who stepped down from the role earlier this year.

I feel Rohit Sharma is one of the best captains: Wasim Jaffer

“Rohit Sharma can become a better Test captain than Virat Kohli. Don’t know how many Tests he will captain, but tactically I feel he is one of the best captains and we are seeing the results of how they have whitewashed each series. It feels like the captaincy has come in the hands of the right captain,” Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo after India’s series win over Sri Lanka.

It must be noted that Kohli ended his tenure as India’s most-successful Test skipper, having guided the team to 40 wins in 68 matches. With Rohit turning 35 next month, he’s unlikely to go past Kohli’s tally. However, he still has a chance to take India to the ICC World Test Championship title, something which Kohli couldn’t do in his tenure.

Meanwhile, both talismans are currently gearing up for 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, which gets underway on March 26. While Rohit will continue to lead five-time champions Mumbai Indians, Kohli, for a change, will play under Faf du Plessis at Royal Challengers Bangalore. India’s cricket schedule is jam-packed following the conclusion of the competition and hence, both Rohit and Kohli would be critical to the team’s success.
